1915-16 Kangaroos 1st Watermark

2d grey complete forme of 30 from the Third Setting with the bottom row being types acccbc, minor surface abrasion on the upper-right unit otherwise very fine, unmounted, £550++ (mounted). Very scarce.

Purple Overprint 2½d indigo SG 74 complete forme of 30 [1-30] from the left-hand pane of Plate 2 with Islands East of Cape York [11] & Islands South of WA [30] from the Third Setting with the bottom row being types acccbc, a couple of hinge remainders. Ex Dr Freidmann.

2½d indigo SG 74 complete forme of 30 [31-60] from the left-hand pane of Plate 2 with Thick Upper-Right Frame [31], Scratch over 'W' of 'TWO' [32], Heavy WA Coastline [43] & Retouch to U/R of Value Circle [55], with sheet margins at left & at base (except under the last two units) with the 'JBC' Monogram, most units - including the Monogram strip of 3 - are unmounted. Ex Dr Freidmann (Lot 367).

Only the initial shipment of the Kangaroo 2½d and the KGV 1d were despatched with margins attached. Surviving formes are rare. All other formes of 30 had the margins removed in Melbourne. Banwell's complete
forme was sold for $9430 (2007).

2½d indigo SG 74 complete forme of 30 [31-60] from the left-hand pane of Plate 2 with Thick Upper-Right Frame [31], Scratch over 'W' of 'TWO' [32], & Retouch to U/R of Value Circle [55], from the Third Setting with the bottom row being types acccbc, most units unmounted.

3d olive SG 76 complete forme of 30 from the Third Setting with the bottom row being types acccbc, a couple of hinge rmainders at top but most units are unmounted, Cat £650++.

£1 brown & blue SG 85 abc strip, very fresh & well centred, the type b unit is unmounted, Cat £1700+. Ex Dr Freidmann (Lot 438). RPSofL Certificate (1980). [Superior to Sir Gawaine Baillie's strip that sold for £1495 (2007).
1915-16 Kangaroos 2nd Watermark

2d 6d 9d 1/- & 5/- (purple overprint) abc strips, generally well centred, lightly mounted & some b & c units are unmounted, Cat £500++. (Qty 5 strips)

1915-16 Kangaroos Second Watermark (SG 86-92) Two Pence Halfpenny: 2½d indigo SG 87 type c, a couple of minor adhesions on the reverse still large-part o.g., under-catalogued at £12,000. BPA Certificate (1992). [One of the great rarities of the Pacific islands, indeed of the British Empire, and surely one of the finest examples in existence]

The majority of examples are affected by a pink stain, one of the consequences of a fire at the Rabaul post office that destroyed most of the supply of the Second Watermark 2½d. This example has just the faintest hint of the staining at lower-left, and this is not apparent from the face. The edge of the affected section is coincident with one of the above-mentioned adhesions, which at first glance gives the impression of a crease, especially as viewed with light inclined across the face. The BPA Certificate states "lower left corner crease". However, we are confident that the stamp is not creased, merely affected by the adhesion being of similar thickness to the stamp iself. In fact, we are of the opinion that this stamp is the equal (though not quite as well centred) of the example - described as having "some gum disturbance" - that we sold for $35,840 after our auction of 25/1/2003. [** Our attention has been drawn to the fact that there is a very small thin spot where some nong has tried to remove one of the adhesions. We stress that it is a very minor defect. The dealer who pointed it out stated: "But it\'s still worth thirty grand". **]

300

5/- grey & chrome SG 92 abc strip with the Overprint in Black, non-contemporary (c.1930) Rabaul cds, Cat £400++. Rare. [Virtually every Second Watermark 5/- we have seen has had an undoubted purple overprint which invariably has an aniline quality and shows clearly from the reverse. Those attributes are entirely absent from this strip]
2d 3d 2/- & £1 (minor hinge remainders & a minor bend) SG 94-99 abc strips, Cat £1200. (Qty 4 strips)
d olive Die II SG 96a abc strip, all units are Die II, a little aged & some faint toning, Cat £320++. Rare.

The rather modest catalogue value - £80 x4 for an abc strip - is somewhat misleading. In a sheet of 120 stamps, there are only 15 Die II units, arranged somewhat capriciously across the lower half of the left-hand pane from the upper plate (Plate 1). Because of this arrangement, abc strips comprising three Die II units can be derived from the first two columns only.
Two Shillings: 2/- brown Watermark Inverted abc strip, Madang cds, Cat £300.

Two Shillings: 2/- brown Watermark Inverted SG 97w block of 4, the last unit with White Dog-Leg Flaw through 'SH' to Value Circle ACSC 37h (Cat $400). Very scarce on an NWPI stamp, especially with Watermark Inverted. [Colonel Evans' used example of the '$' for 'S' Flaw - with the same ACSC catalogue value as this item - sold for $935 (2001)]

1915-16 Kangaroos 3rd Watermark
£1 brown & blue SG 99 types a b & c singles, the last with a hinge remainder, the others very lightly mounted, Cat £750+. (Qty 3)
One Pound: £1 brown & blue SG 99 type b with Large Stops after 'W' & 'S' [16], Cat £250++. [There is also a plate flaw not listed in the ACSC: Broken Coast near Derby (to left of the 'N' of 'N.W.P.I.')]

'One Penny' on KGV 5d and on Kangaroo 1/- SG 100-101 abc strips, the 'b' units are unmounted, Cat £720+. Very scarce. [Sir Gawaine Baillie's two similar "sets" sold for £506 & £483 respectively (2007)]

One Penny' on KGV 5d and on Kangaroo 1/- SG 100-101 ab & c singles, the 5d type b is a huge and magnificent example, Rabaul cds, Cat £465+.
'One Penny' on Kangaroo 1/- SG 101 type a block of 4, four strikes of 'RABAUL/20MY18' cds, Cat £300+. RPSofL Certificate (2001) absurdly states "obliterated by favour": please show us any example from this issue that wasn't! [The cds is dated three days before the accepted date of issue, 23rd May 1918]
1918-23 Fifth Setting on Kangaroos 3rd Watermark

Two Pence Halfpenny: 2½d indigo SG 107 complete forme of 30 from the left-hand pane of Plate 2 [31 to 60] with Cracked Cliché (Fourth State) [31], Scratch above 'W' of 'TWO' (Third State: Retouched) [32], Missing '1' in Fraction [33] SG 106a, Heavy Coastline to WA [43] & [49], some irregular perfs at base, a few minor hinge remainders on the top row but most units are unmounted, Cat £6000++. Ex Dr Freidmann (Lot 613). RPSofL Certificate (1980).

One of the most desirable items in New Guinea philately. [This forme is almost identical to Colonel Harrie Evans' forme of 30 that sold for $9350 (2001). Another forme of 30 - some toning but the variety unmounted - sold for $16,100 at a Sydney auction in February 2007. Sir Gawainne Baillie's unmounted single of the "Missing Fraction" sold for £6900 = $A17,000 (2007)]

Two Pence: 2d grey Die I SG 106 complete forme of 30 from the right-hand pane of Plate 2 [1 to 30] with Flaw below 'P' of 'PENCE' [10], a few short perfs, most units are unmounted.

Two Pence: 2d grey Die IIA SG 106a complete forme of 30, some short/pulled perfs at base, a few minor hinge remainders but most units are unmounted, Cat £330++. Ex Dr Freidmann.

Ex Dr Freidmann.

Three Pence: 3d greenish olive SG 108 complete forme of 30 with Overprint Varieties Nick at Upper-Left of 'I' of 'ISLANDS' [7] & Black Flaw on 'W' [23], a few units lightly mounted otherwise unmounted, Cat £690++. Ex Dr Freidmann.

Three Pence: 3d greenish olive SG 108 complete forme of 30 from the left-hand pane of Plate 2 [31 to 60] with Retouch over First 'A' of 'AUSTRALIA' [59], a few units lightly mounted otherwise unmounted, Cat £690++. Ex Dr Freidmann.

Three Pence: 3d greenish olive SG 109/a complete forme of 30 from the left-hand pane of Plate 1 [31 to 60] with fifteen Die II units - including four horizontal and two vertical Dies I-II pairs - a few units lightly mounted otherwise unmounted, Cat £2980++. Ex Dr Freidmann. [Sir Gawaine Baillie's complete forme (unmounted but with "light creasing") sold for £1840 (2007)]

Six Pence: 6d ultramarine SG 110 complete forme of 30, a few units lightly mounted otherwise unmounted. Ex Dr Freidmann. [While this stamp is catalogued at only a few pounds each, complete formes of 30 are very scarce]

One Shilling: 1/- emerald SG 113 complete forme of 30, a few units lightly mounted otherwise unmounted. Ex Dr Freidmann. [While this stamp is catalogued at only a few pounds each, complete formes of 30 are very scarce. Banwell's two similar formes sold for $862 & $977 (2007)]

One Shilling: ditto, a slightly different shade, some minor doubling of the overprint, a few units mounted but most units are unmounted.

One Shilling: 1/- pale blue-green SG 113a complete forme of 30, a few units mounted but most units are unmounted. Ex Dr Freidmann.

Two & Five Shillings: 2/- brown SG 115 and 5/- grey & yellow SG116 matching blocks of 6 (2x3), lightly mounted, Cat £480+. (Qty 2 blocks)

One Pound: £1 as SG 118 but brown & ultramarine, lightly mounted, Cat £2750.

Despite the facts being recorded in Gibbons Stamp Monthly of September 1928, Gibbons have steadfastly failed to list the two quite distinctive printings of SG 118. Most examples are of the "brown & grey-blue" printing as listed by Gibbons. Examples in the brighter shade of blue seen here are very rare. Our experience suggests that less than 10% of the surviving examples of SG 118 are from this printing. Colonel Harrie Evans' example sold for $4620 (2001).
