TWO SHILLING MAROON |
|
| Welcome to Hell. The worst possible denomination to attempt to collect.
May 1, 1924 Introduced at across-the-board color changes for UPU requirements. The 2/- was altered to 'Maroon' because of potential colour confusion with the new 6d brown. Not nearly as successful or as relevant as one might hope. The choice of color in fact was pretty stupid.
To hell with 6d colour confusion. This is worse. The colour confusion here should be self evident. Stamps with red tinge are maroons. Brown is distinct. Brown can never be mistaken when viewed with other, distinct browns. But try telling yourself that when you've looked at them a little too long. I suspect there' s plenty of genuine brown's in people's collections placed as maroons and would explain the otherwise inexplicable rarity of brown imprints or might explain why the public didn't really notice. Until too late to buy any remainders from the GPO. Coupled with the confusion of a much much much later rotary press 2/- maroon, this is the worst denomination of all to try and piece together. It is almost a guarantee that neither a stamp album, nor an auctioneers description, will be correct. |
